The ACE CPT Scenario Based Learning Series

The ACE CPT exam doesn’t just ask what a concept is; it asks how to apply it in real-world situations. This Master Course uses Scenario-Based Layered Learning to simulate the actual decision-making process of a fitness professional.

Instead of standard multiple-choice questions, you will face realistic client scenarios that evolve as you answer them. You must diagnose the situation (Layer 1) and then determine the correct intervention (Layer 2). This format builds the critical thinking skills required to pass the exam and succeed in your career.”

Part I: Introduction & Professional Foundation

Chapter 1: Role and Scope of Practice

  • Focus: Professional Boundaries, Legal Responsibilities, and Ethics.

Ch 2.1 – ACE IFT Model Overview & Rapport

Ch 2.2 – Cardiorespiratory Training Phases

Ch 2.3 – Muscular Training Phases

Part II: Behavior Change & Communication

Chapter 3: Basics of Behavior Change

  • Focus: The Transtheoretical Model (TTM) and Motivational Interviewing.
  • Description: Behavior change is ACE’s “signature” topic. Test your ability to identify a client’s Stage of Change (Precontemplation to Maintenance) and apply the correct psychological strategies (OARS) to prevent relapse.

Ch 3.1 – Transtheoretical Model (TTM)

Ch 3.2 – Determinants of Behavior

Ch 3.3 –Motivational Interviewing & OARS

Chapter 4: Effective Communication & Goal Setting

  • Focus: Active Listening, Learning Styles, and SMART Goals.
  • Description: Great trainers are great communicators. This module challenges you to set SMART goals and adapt your teaching style (Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic) to match your client’s needs for motor learning.

Ch 4.1 – Communication Stages

Ch 4.2 – Goal Setting & Teaching Techniques

Part III: Screening & Nutrition

Chapter 5: Preparticipation Health Screening

  • Focus: Medical Clearance, Risk Factors, and Safety.
  • Description: Safety is your #1 priority. This module uses the ACSM screening algorithm to test your ability to look at a client’s health history and decide: Do they need a doctor’s clearance before they start exercising?

Ch 5.1 – Basics of Exercise Psychology

Ch 5.2 – Health Screening Algorithms

Ch 5.3 – Risk Factors & Medical Clearance

Chapter 6: Nutrition

  • Focus: Scope of Practice and General Dietary Guidelines.
  • Description: Avoid the “nutrition trap.” This quiz focuses on what you can do (educate based on guidelines) versus what you cannot do (prescribe meal plans), while covering essential hydration and macronutrient basics.

Ch 6 – Nutrition

Part IV: The Science of Training

Chapter 7: Resting Assessments & Anthropometry

  • Focus: Vitals, Body Composition, and Measurement.
  • Description: Learn to collect the data that matters. This module covers protocols for measuring blood pressure, heart rate, and body composition (skin calipers vs. bioelectrical impedance) to establish a baseline.

Ch 7.1 – Resting Assessments & Anthropometry

Ch 7.2 – Vitals & Heart Rate

Chapter 8: Cardiorespiratory Training

  • Focus: Physiology, VT1/VT2 Thresholds, and Zone Training.
  • Description: One of the most technical chapters in the book. This deep dive covers the 3-Zone training model, how to identify the Talk Test thresholds (VT1/VT2), and how to program intervals for different fitness levels.

Ch 8.1 – Cardiorespiratory Physiology Basics

Ch 8.2 – Monitoring Exercise Intensity

Ch 8.3 – Cardiorespiratory Assessments

Ch 8.4 – Programming Progression (IFT Model)

Chapter 9: Muscular Training: Foundations

  • Focus: Anatomy, Physiology, and Biomechanics.
  • Description: The physics of movement. This module reviews muscle fiber types, planes of motion (sagittal, frontal, transverse), and the fundamental mechanics of how muscles generate force.

Ch 9.1 – Muscle Physiology & Mechanics

Ch 9.2 – Foundational Training Principles

Chapter 10: Muscular Training: Assessments

  • Focus: Posture, Movement Screens (OH Squat), and Balance.
  • Description: The most practical skill for a trainer. Test your eye for detail by analyzing the Overhead Squat Assessment to identify muscle imbalances (what is tight vs. what is weak) and postural deviations.

Ch 10.1 – Static Postural Assessments

Ch 10.2 – The Overhead Squat Assessment

Ch 10.3 – Balance & Core Assessments

Ch 10.4 – Strength & Endurance Assessments

Chapter 11: Integrated Exercise Programming

  • Focus: Periodization, Load Management, and Program Design.
  • Description: Put it all together. This module tests your ability to manipulate variables (sets, reps, tempo, rest) and organize them into long-term plans (macrocycles) for strength, hypertrophy, or endurance goals.

Ch 11.1 – IFT Model for Muscular Training

Ch 11.2 – Training Variables (FITT-VP)

Ch 11.3 – Periodization

Part V: Special Populations

Chapter 12: Considerations for Clients with Obesity
